The UK Data Archive, based at the University of Essex, holds the UK’s largest collection of digital research data in the Social Sciences and Humanities, including major UK government-sponsored surveys, cross-national surveys, longitudinal studies and UK census data.
We are now looking for an enthusiastic Web Developer who has a passion for delivering modern, responsive web interfaces.
Duties of the Role
The web portal you will be helping deliver is the Smart Energy Research Lab, a multi-million pound five year big data project with a national profile, which will ingest smart meter data from tens of thousands of UK households.
The purpose of this role is to build and optimise the front-end infrastructure based on UX/UI designs set by the repository architect in response to researcher requirements. In doing so, the post holder will also work closely with other developers in the team to acquire the necessary skills to manipulate data from ElasticSearch and Hadoop clusters at the back-end in a microservices environment, taking an active role in how the application functions as well as in how it looks.
This post holder will be responsible for:
* Ensuring the technical feasibility of UI/UX designs for the Smart Meter Energy Lab;
* Building reusable code and libraries for future use;
* Rapid prototyping of new features and amending them in response to user feedback;
* Developing and suggesting new user-facing features;
* Optimizing web applications for maximum speed and scalability.
A full list of duties and responsibilities can be found within the job pack.
Qualifications and Skills required
The successful candidate will hold an Undergraduate or first degree in a computer-related or data-related discipline.
An understanding of web mark-up, including HTML5 and CSS3, of client-side scripting and JavaScript frameworks, particularly ReactJS (Vue or Ember also considered), and of handling JSON data structures are some of essential requirements for this post. A full list of requirements can be found under the Person Specification of the job pack.
While working on the delivery of the portal into production in the first year, we will also provide opportunities to gain exposure to leading-edge microservices and big data technologies, so that you can eventually mature into a full-stack developer. You will join a small, friendly team who believe in being disruptive and being unafraid to challenge received wisdom. If you would like to work on next-generation technology in an environment that encourages innovation and independent thinking, please apply.
We particularly welcome applications from those from an ethnic minority as they are under-represented in the UK Data Service.
The post is fixed-term, full-time until 31/05/2022 due to funding. Please note, applications will be considered from anyone looking to work anything above 30 hours per week..
This post involves access to Government systems, information or data and will be subject to the staff vetting process. Further information can found in the job pack.
