Launch of eLearning course for postgraduate students on new UK Data Service Moodle

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new eLearning course, Introduction to Finding and Using Data, hosted on the new UK Data Service Moodle learning platform.

This flexible, self-paced online course comprises eight short modules exploring how to find, evaluate, and use data responsibly. The course is designed to help those beginning their own research projects and includes a practical introduction to sourcing and working with social research data.

Finding and using data

The modules were developed and piloted in collaboration with three ESRC Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs): White Rose DTP, Midlands DTP, and the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science. The course has now been updated based on student feedback and, this year, is being made available more widely across the DTP network, reaching postgraduate students at universities across England, Wales, and Scotland.

Drawing on expertise from across the UK Data Service, the modules cover topics such as types and sources of data, evaluating and accessing datasets, ethical considerations, navigating datasets, and reproducible research. We were also pleased to collaborate with additional experts to develop a module introducing students to the data and research potential of Understanding Society, the UK Household Longitudinal Study.

UK Data Service Moodle

The new UK Data Service Moodle provides a user-friendly platform for accessing training materials, with progress tracking and certificates of completion. In the coming year, we plan to expand the range of training available on the platform.
