UK Data Service drop-in sessions

We hold regular online drop-in sessions for researchers needing help in the following areas:

  • Support with using the UK Data Service SecureLab.
  • Support with either wanting to receive help on computational social science projects or provide assistance to others working in this area of expertise.
  • Support for anyone currently working with survey data, or thinking of working with it in the future.

The drop-ins take place on Zoom and are free to attend. Follow the links below for more information and to find out how to book your place.

SecureLab drop-in

This monthly drop-in session is for UK Data Service SecureLab users who have any queries regarding aspects of SecureLab use. We run four fifteen minute one-to-one sessions over the course of an hour.

After booking your place, please email support@ukdataservice.ac.uk to let us know in advance what broad areas you wish to discuss (in case we need to check anything for you), or if you have any questions about the drop-in.

Computational social science drop-in

Join this drop-in to receive help on computational social science projects, or provide support for others. A data expert from the UK Data Service will be present to chair the session. Feel free to join us for general advice on getting data, learning to code and much more.

We can cover these areas:

  • What to do if you find yourself stuck on a project.
  • Help if you are not sure of what to learn next.
  • Support if you want to meet other computational social scientists.
  • Learn or teach some data skills with like-minded individuals.

The sessions take place on the second Tuesday of the month.

You only need to book once to attend the sessions from September to November.

Survey data drop-in

This drop-in is for anyone currently working with survey data, or thinking about working with it in the future, to provide help and advice with their project or research. It is targeted at academic and non-academic researchers, as well as students, and anyone with an interest in survey data. This includes absolute beginners or more seasoned users.

Come along to discuss any questions you might have with experts from the UK Data Service training team during this one hour session.

We can help with a wide variety of topics, such as:

  • Deciding which surveys could be useful for your project and how to find them.
  • Finding variables that match your needs.
  • Understanding survey documentation.
  • Population inference: using weights and survey design variables.
  • Working with longitudinal data.
  • Key things to consider when using secondary survey data.
  • Software related questions: R, Stata or SPSS.
  • Any other queries you might have.
