Vacancy: Technical Support Officer, UK Data Archive

The UK Data Archive holds the UK’s largest collection of digital research data in the Social Sciences and Humanities, including major UK government-sponsored surveys, cross-national surveys, longitudinal studies and UK census data.

We are seeking to appoint a Technical Support Officer to join the Technical Services directorate of the UK Data Archive. The section provides support for the critical needs of the other divisions in the UK Data Archive, by installing, commissioning, configuring, developing, maintaining and updating internal and external systems which are in everyday use.

Role and Duties

The post-holder will be part of a small team that is responsible for:

  • The provision of front line IT support to staff
  • The installation and configuration of PCs and associated peripherals and software
  • Administrative tasks including maintaining an asset register; configuring user accounts; creating and maintaining AD security groups; creating folder structures and securing them; and checking authentication and authorisation levels

Qualifications and Skills

You will be expected to hold 2 A-levels in Computing, Mathematics or Science (grades A-C) or an equivalent recent technical qualification, and a GCSE pass or equivalent in English Language and Mathematics. An Undergraduate degree or equivalent in a technical subject is desirable but not essential for the post.

Candidates should have a proven track record of general IT support in an MS Windows/Office environment, MS Windows file systems and network security as well as prior experience in a helpdesk or customer service environment. In addition, analysis, problem solving and prioritisation skills, excellent attention to detail, a structured and methodical approach to work, an ability to work independently and direct own work, good written and verbal communication skills in English and an ability to work as part of a team are required skills and abilities.

Location: Colchester

Salary: £29,799 – £32,548 per annum
