ADRC-Scotland: Understanding Households in Administrative Data workshop

Households are sociological and statistical units that have substantial policy significance.

The Census Transformation Programme has explored use of administrative data in estimating household in the UK. However, there are many challenges in terms of using administrative data to identify households and collect information on households. Administrative data have information about individuals, but not relationships, which are also of interest. Conversely, information about co-residence does not imply household in budgeting, living, or relationship terms.

This workshop includes speakers from Office of National Statistics and National Records Scotland, who introduce current practice in the UK. Invited speakers will introduce international practice from Norway. Topics will also include some aspects of user needs for information beyond 'dwellings' and the validity of the definitions in other cultures. There will be some discussion on estimation approaches and future prospects for quality, uses and estimates.

To conclude, a panel session will be included to discuss the way forward and future research and collaborative opportunities.

The workshop is supported by ONS, NRS, ADRC-S as well as the RSS.
