Confident Spatial Analysis in QGIS (NEW DATE)
This one day event for
researchers lead by Clear Mapping Co, will cover how to
prepare and analyse spatial data using a range of techniques in QGIS.
In this course we will
cover how to use a variety of different types of spatial data. We will show you
how to display data with postcodes, plot data with XY coordinates (e.g. crime
data) and analyse a range of data using tools such as spatial overlay, buffers
and a range of other spatial analyses. We will recap the basic theory needed to
understand what is happening in GIS, as well as giving you step-by-step
practical instructions to work with a range of types of data in QGIS, the
market leading free, open-source GIS. We will also show you how to combine
different data layers and use the GIS to help you make spatial decisions.
Target Audience:
By the end of the course you will be
confident at importing and processing spatial data from a variety of sources,
and have the knowledge to apply these skills to your own data sets. We will
have some dedicated time towards the end of the course for you to apply the
skills you have learnt to your own data sets.
It is recommended that you have some
previous experience of working with spatial data, ideally using QGIS.
Attendance at Clear Mapping Co’s Introduction to QGIS: Understanding and
Presenting Spatial Data course would be fine, or another course covering
similar material.

Course tutor: David Partridge, BSc, PgDip
David (Dave) Partridge is a GIS Course leader who has worked for the Dartmoor National Park. He delivers GIS Courses around the country for students, public and private institutions.
Course Outline:
The
course covers:
- Plotting data with XP points
- Understanding why coordinate systems are
important - Finding and evaluating spatial data for
fitness for use - Use a range of spatial overlay techniques in QGIS
Learning Outcomes:
By
the end of the course participants will:
- Be able to locate and
open a range of GIS data sets - Understand how to import,
join and make use of postcode and XY coordinate based data - Know how to apply a range
of GIS analysis tools, including spatial overlays, point-in-polygon analysis
and spatial joins. - Be aware of other types
of GIS analysis and where they could be used -
Be confident at applying the skills to their own
data sets
This is a computer lab based training course.
