This free two-day workshop, jointly organised by the UK Data Service and methods@manchester, will introduce you to crime data available for analysis from the UK Data Service and other sources, and how to start analysing them using the software package R.

The purpose of this workshop is to provide an overview of the data available and an understanding of how quantitative methods can be used to analyse crime data.

We will introduce key data sources about crime from the UK Data Service and give some examples of how they have been used in research.  Lectures and practical sessions will give you hands-on experience of analysing secondary data using R. Experienced researchers will present how they have used crime data in quantitative research with an emphasis on the opportunities for future work.

During the workshop, participants will:

  • learn about the UKDS collection of crime-related secondary data and how to access them
  • learn how researchers have used crime data in their research
  • gain practical experience of descriptive statistics and basic analyses of crime data using R
  • visualise crime indicators and critically analyse them using R
  • produce a map to display the spatial distribution of crime indicators using R

Speakers:
Day 1: Dr Ana Morales-Gomez, UK Data Service and University of Manchester
Day 2: Dr Sam Langton, Manchester Metropolitan University

Level: Introductory
Experience/knowledge required: Participants should have basic experience of quantitative analysis using a statistics package
Target audience: This workshop is aimed at researchers, data analysts and PhD students interested in learning more about what data are available for secondary analysis of crime and how to get started with data analysis using R
