UK Data Service Dissertation Award: The 2022-2023 deadline and judges

Are you an undergraduate student using data from the UK Data Service in your dissertation this year? If so, consider entering your dissertation for the UK Data Service Dissertation Award.

About the award

Up to three winners will receive a prize of £300 and publicity about their work. The award is open to students who have completed a dissertation on a social science topic and have used data available from the UK Data Service. Previous entries have covered a diverse mix of topics such as inequality, transitions across the life course, voting behaviour and smoking. The deadline for entries is 28 June 2023.

Meet the judges

Each year, our judging panel includes experts from the UK Data Service and academic staff from a range of social science disciplines. This year, we are delighted to have Professor Paula Surridge and Dr Alita Nandi join Dr Jen Buckley from our User Support and Training team.

Paula Surridge is a Professor of Political Sociology at the University of Bristol’s School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies. Paula’s research focuses on social and political values, using large-scale quantitative data sources to investigate how these values have influenced voting behaviour at general elections, and more recently at the EU Referendum.

Dr Alita Nandi is the Associate Director (Outreach) for Understanding Society. Based at the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER), she oversees the study’s user support and training activities as well as contributing to the study’s questionnaire design and data management activities. She is a quantitative social scientist whose main research areas are ethnicity and gender, specifically investigating differences in subjective wellbeing (e.g. life satisfaction, mental health) as well as economic wellbeing (e.g. income, wages).
