Developing research questions

In this free online workshop we will explore ways of developing effective questions to frame your social science research. We will use themes from across the Social Sciences to develop questions that help you to describe the social world, explore change over time and space, and look at associations between the characteristics of people, households and places.

Developing research questions is a cyclical process. Informed by what we know already we can identify specific areas and the kind of data we need to explore them. As we explore the data available or the feasibility of collecting what we need there is often a need to refine the scope and the research questions to ensure we can address them in the time available to us. Early results may identify further areas for exploration and lead to further refinement of our research questions.

We will provide the opportunity for participants to discuss their own research problems in smaller groups and offer advice on further sources of information about the data sources we hold and the analysis techniques that can be applied.
