Love Data Week 2025: Whose data is it, anyway?

It’s that time of year again, Love Data Week 2025 is here! This year’s event is dedicated to the issue of data ownership, inviting us to think about where the data we use comes from as we ask, “whose data is it, anyway?”

This is a topic we care deeply about at the UK Data Service. We try to make it as easy as possible for users to find information about how the data we provide access to has been collected.

We’re also passionate about the need to cite data correctly. It’s impossible to analyse and verify new pieces of research if we don’t know where datasets have come from. That’s why we run a dedicated Cite the Data campaign to emphasise that citing a dataset is just as important as citing articles, books, images and websites.
