Family Resources Survey: New data and online learning module now available

The UK Data Service is pleased to announce the release of the latest data from the Family Resources Survey (FRS), alongside a new online learning module designed to support data users.

The Family Resources Survey is one of the primary sources of information on income and living standards in the UK. Covering topics from poverty to pensions, it underpins vital research into all aspects of household finances.

The data is widely used by organisations such as the Resolution Foundation and the Institute for Fiscal Studies. Data from the Family Resources Survey, 2023–24 is now available via our data catalogue.

Getting started with the Family Resources Survey

To help researchers and analysts make the most of this valuable resource, we have launched a new, free-to-access data skills module: Getting started with the Family Resources Survey (FRS).

The interactive module includes:

  • An overview of the survey, including sample design.
  • Key features of the datasets and documentation.
  • Guidance on accessing the data.
  • Hands-on exercises with code examples (R and SPSS), including merging data files.

Developed in collaboration with the Survey Branch at the Department for Work and Pensions, the module features expert video contributions offering insider perspectives on the design and purpose of the survey.

Ahead of the release of the module, Steve Ellerd-Elliott, Chief Statistician at the Department for Work and Pensions, said: “FRS datasets have been available to users through the UK Data Service for many years. We’re pleased to have collaborated with the UK Data Service on developing new training for users. This module will be hugely beneficial to anyone interested in the incomes and characteristics of UK families. It will help new users get started with their analysis and provide valuable support for analysts at all levels.”

Whether you’re new to the FRS or looking to refresh your knowledge, this module offers a comprehensive starting point for understanding and using the data effectively.

Research and teaching resources

The data skills module is ideal for those involved in teaching and learning. It includes media-rich content exploring key aspects of survey design, along with practical exercises in R and SPSS, suitable for both classroom use and self-study.

You can read more about the module in our supporting blog post, which explores how the data skills module can enhance your research or teaching.
