The best of both worlds? Linking survey and administrative data for labour market research
This webinar will explore how combining Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) data with HMRC PAYE (Pay As You Earn) administrative records enables researchers to observe employment trajectories, concurrent jobs and earnings patterns that are difficult to capture using either source alone. It will present a more dynamic picture of multiple jobholding in Britain than conventional labour market statistics suggest. The webinar will also examine the methodological opportunities and challenges associated with linked administrative data, including linkage design, measurement, data quality, interpretation and data access.
The guest presenter will be Dr Darja Reuschke. Darja is Associate Professor at the City-Region Economic Development Institute (City-REDI) at the University of Birmingham. She held an Administrative Data Research (ADR) UK fellowship 2024-2026 in the ADR UK ‘world of work’ theme. Her fellowship explored multiple employment using linked administrative data. She also held an Understanding Society research fellowship in 2025 using new geographical data linkages with the UK Household Longitudinal Study. She is a Co-Investigator of the ADR UK Academic Lead team to facilitate and deliver better linked administrative data and policy relevant research (2026-2031) with a focus on RAPID. As Co-Investigator of the UKRI Healthy Low-Carbon Transport Hub (2025-2030), she studies remote working using secondary data.
The webinar will be facilitated by Dr Pierre Walthéry. Pierre is a Research Associate in the Training and User Support team of the UK Data Service. He has published research about gender, flexible working and working time and currently leads on data linkage training at the UK Data Service.
