This training session is aimed at early-career researchers and will introduce them to the resources and support available from the UK Data Service. This will cover various elements of the research lifecycle but will focus in particular on accessing and using secondary data sources for academic research. These topics are themselves framed within the wider context of good research practice and to ensure  scientific integrity.

By the end of this training session the participants will

  • Have an understanding of the importance of data-sharing in the context of scientific research
  • Have learned about the different types of quantitative and qualitative data available from the UK Data Service
  • Know how to register with the Service to access data
  • Have seen how data can be used in online tools and also downloaded into a variety of formats
  • Understand how to search and browse for data using a number of different resource discovery tools
  • Have seen how data are used to solve real-life problems
  • Understand how to cite data effectively and increase the visibility of their own work to other researchers
  • Have seen how UK Data Service resources can be used in teaching
  • Know what training and support resources are available to them
  • Know how to contact us for expert advice and keep in touch with new developments

Early-career researchers are the primary focus but this session would be useful for any student, academic, researcher or librarian who uses quantitative social science data sources.
