Enhancing and Enriching Historic Census Microdata (EEHCM)
The Enhancing and Enriching Historic Census Microdata (EEHCM) project was structured in two phases.
In the first phase, record-level data was recovered from archival data held by the relevant data controllers. This involved extracting, transforming and reloading all existing data files and applying variable and value labels. These data were delivered to the data controllers for permanent preservation.
The second phase involved the specification and creation of the Samples of Anonymised Records (SARs) from these complete datasets. The end result was a series of datasets which were harmonised with the existing SARs for 1991 and 2001, available from the UK Data Service.
1981 data
End User Licence
Available to registered users who have agreed to the licence conditions. Overseas applications must be approved by the data depositors.

Open data
The 1981 Census Microdata Teaching Dataset for Great Britain can be used as a ‘taster’ file for 1981 Census data and is freely available for anyone to download under an Open Government Licence.
1971 data
