Registration

Information on the registration and ordering process is available by selecting one of the following options:

UK university or college users

If you are a student or member of staff from a UK institution of higher or further education (UK HE/FE), you can register with us using the username and password issued to you by your institution.

To Login/Register:

The first time you use the 'Login/Register' link you will be taken to a registration page. Complete the online registration form, agree to the End User Licence (EUL) outlining the terms and conditions of use, and follow the instructions to complete your registration.

Once registration is complete you will be able to download/order data from us.

Other UK users

If you are in the UK and your organisation is part of the UK Access Management Federation (UKAMF) you can access our resources using the username and password issued to you by your organisation. To check whether your institution is part of the UKAMF consult this list of federation members.

If you are a personal user, or you work in local government or for a charity or your institution is not part of the UKAMF you can still access our resources. However, you will first have to apply for a UK Data Archive username and password.

When these have been supplied to you, you will then need to complete the UK Data Service registration process as detailed for UK university or college users.

Note that you will have to select the 'UK Data Archive' as your organisation when you log in and/or register.

Once registration is complete you will be able to download/order data from us.

Non UK users

If you are not in the UK you can access our resources but will first have to apply for a UK Data Archive username and password.

When these have been supplied to you, you will then need to complete the UK Data Service registration process as detailed for UK university or college users.

Note that you will have to select the 'UK Data Archive' as your organisation when you log in and/or register.

Once registration is complete you will be able to download/order data from us.

Restrictions on access:

Due to the data redistribution licence agreements we have with data providers/service funders, registration will not permit non-UK users access to:

  • cross-national macrodata such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) databanks
  • most of our cross-national survey data
  • UK census data from 1971 onwards
  • selected Special Licence versions of our survey data
  • restricted data through secure access

Commercial users

Users from commercial organisations can access the majority of our resources but will be required to obtain a commercial licence if the intended use is defined as commercial according to the following definition:

  • Commercial use: Research is defined as 'commercial' where a direct objective is to generate revenue and/or where data are requested for sale, resale, loan, transfer or hire
  • Non-commercial use: Any individual employed by, or undertaking research for, any organisation, may use data even if this entails monetary reward, where a public good results from the use. Public good can be defined as an activity which widens access to information sourced from our collection and has social or economic benefit

To access data you will need to apply for a UK Data Archive username and password and then register with the UK Data Service as detailed for UK university or college users, remembering to select the 'UK Data Archive' as your organisation when you log in and/or register.

You should note that:

  • commercial users are not permitted access to our cross-national macro databanks and UK census data from 1971 onwards. This is due to our data redistribution licence agreements with the data providers/service funders
  • studies requiring completion of a Special Licence or the ONS Approved Researcher forms cannot be used for commercial purposes
  • restricted data through secure access
  • commercial orders are subject to an administrative charge and details are available from our charges page

Once registration is complete you will be able to download/order data from us.
