Challenging gender bias in the world of data

Dr Julia Kasmire, a computational social scientist for the UK Data Service, has experienced many successes during her career as a data specialist but she has also faced some challenges as a woman along the way.A data bank from 1968 entitled First of its kind

To mark International Women’s Day on 8 March, which champions the theme: “Choose to Challenge”, we interviewed Julia to find out more about her expertise and the occasions when she was forced to tackle gender bias in the workplace.

In the podcast below, she tells us about how she coped with these difficult situations and what she thinks needs to change to improve equality. She also provides advice for young women looking to start a new career in the world of data.

Ultimately, Julia believes that more research needs to be invested into discovering new solutions that could improve the experiences of women in the workplace.

As a computational social scientist, she is interested in pulling together existing data, drawing the most relevant conclusions from these studies and then putting into practice new experiments and ideas that could lead to greater equality.
