What is the UK Data Service Dissertation Award? And when is the deadline?
The award is open to students who have completed a dissertation on a social science topic and have used data available from the UK Data Service. Up to three winners will receive a prize of £300 and publicity about their work. The deadline for entries is 12:00 midday on 20 June 2024.
What have previous entries covered?
Entries to the dissertation award have covered a wide range of topics including experiences of crime, elections, income inequality, access to green spaces, obesity, health trajectories, migration and environmental behaviours. Read more about our previous winners in 2021 and winners in 2022.
Who are the judges?
Each year, our panel of judges comprises experts from the UK Data Service alongside academic staff from a range of social science disciplines.
We are delighted to say that this year we have Professor Paula Surridge and Professor Alex Bryson, joining Dr Jen Buckley from our User Support and Training team.
Paula Surridge is a Professor of Political Sociology at the University of Bristol’s School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies. Paula’s research focuses on social and political values, using large-scale quantitative data sources to investigate how these values have influenced voting behaviour at general elections, and more recently at the EU Referendum.
Alex Bryson is Professor of Quantitative Social Science at UCL’s Social Research Institute, and a Research Fellow at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, the IZA Institute of Labor Economics and WISERD. He is Chief Editor of Industrial Relations: A Journal of Economy and Society and an editor of The Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series A and the Journal of Participation and Employee Ownership.
