Webinar: Developing a user-centred, web-first approach to collecting socio-demographic and household data – part of the ONS Labour Force Survey Transformation Project

1 Jul 2019 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Data skills

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is transforming the way its surveys collect data. It is introducing an online mode, and designing for a web-first approach to mixed-mode collection, which brings challenges and opportunities.

This free webinar, organised by the UK Data Service, will be presented by Emma Dickinson, a Senior Research Officer at ONS. Emma will describe how ONS is developing a respondent-centric approach to moving survey data collection online, with a specific focus on collecting household and sociodemographic information.

The webinar will cover:

  • the challenge ONS faces to ‘move with the times’ and develop online modes for its surveys
  • the qualitative development that has taken place so far on the Labour Force Survey, with a focus on the collection of household and sociodemographic information
  • shares evidence on the effectiveness of this approach from recent online quantitative surveys

The webinar will consist of a 40 minute presentation followed by 20 minutes for questions.

Level: Introductory/Intermediate
Experience/Knowledge required: Basic understanding of surveys
Target audience:

  • anyone with an interest in understanding the LFS transformation programme and the approach the ONS is using to transform its surveys from interview to online surveys
  • anyone with a need to develop or design a survey which collects household or sociodemographic information
  • government departments or other individuals who are interested in user centred or online first survey design
