Webinar: Education in the long run – which data are available?

2 Apr 2019 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Data skills

This webinar is jointly organised by the UK Data Service and CeLSIUS as part of the ESRC-funded data resources' collaborative webinar series, ESRC data resources: discovering data and how to use it.

The webinar is for those who would like to know more about sources of data available for investigating education. It will focus particularly on longitudinal data but also touch on available cross-sectional sources.

The session will explore:

  • The range of longitudinal data on education available from the UK Data Service, including harmonised data, such as ‘Understanding Society: Waves 1-8, 2009-2017' and 'Harmonised BHPS: Waves 1-18, 1991-2009‘
  • The ONS Longitudinal Study, including the data structure, available research topics (with a focus on education) and procedures for access. Some results will be  presented on how education relates to economic activity status through the life-course in a historical sample of young men and women
  • The value of using of longitudinal data for educational research purposes: case studies

The first 45 minutes of the webinar will be devoted to presentations from Beate Lichtwardt (UK Data Service) and Wei Xun (CeLSIUS), followed by 15 minutes of Q&A.

If you have any queries or require further information about this event, please contact the CLOSER Communications and Events Assistant, Jennie Blows (

The webinar series is the result of a collaboration between a number of
ESRC-funded resource centres working together to promote the value and
use of social science data. The collaboration is made up of several
organisations, including: CeLSIUS, NILS_RSU, SLS-DSU, CLOSER, Understanding Society, the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS), the UK Data Service, the National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM), and the three ESRC-funded big data centres; the Urban Big Data Centre (UBDC), ESRC Business and Local Government Data Research Centre (BLG) and Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC).

About the webinar series

The ESRC-funded data resources are running a series of
collaborative webinars highlighting the wide range of data sources ready
and waiting to be explored and utilised by researchers and academics.
Split into four separate sessions, each focusing on a different
research topic, the series aims to help novice as well as experienced
data users discover new data sources that could aid their own
investigations. The research topics to be featured are as follows:

  • Journey to work
  • Ethnicity and migration
  • Obesity
  • Education

hour long webinar will consist of 2-3 presentations from expert
researchers, examples of how different data sources have been used in
real research case studies, as well as time set aside for participants
to pose questions and ask our presenters for advice.
