About the project
FAIR-IMPACT is a European Horizon project which will contribute to the implementation of the FAIR principles across the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), in collaboration with other EOSC agencies.
Background
EOSC was established in 2015 to create an open and trusted environment for the access and management of publicly funded research data across Europe. One of the key drivers of EOSC is to support the full implementation and adoption of the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) when managing, curating and using digital assets.
EOSC is now within its implementation phase and is supporting initiatives that will further define and share the FAIR principles, while developing data services that allow researchers to access, reuse and combine FAIR-compliant data. The FAIR-IMPACT project will help to embed FAIR-enabling practices, tools and services across scientific communities and within research outputs at a European, national, and institutional levels.
Objectives
FAIR-IMPACT will attempt to apply FAIR solutions across scientific domains on persistent identifiers (PIDs), metadata and ontologies, metrics, certification and interoperability aspects via a set of integrated use cases within the social sciences and humanities, photon and neutron sciences, life sciences and agri-food and environmental sciences.
These solutions will enable repository managers, research performing organisations, funders and policy makers to practice FAIR data management, and researchers and citizen scientists to produce FAIR data. Further uptake of FAIR data principles and practices will then be boosted via cascading grants that will provide financial as well as in-kind support for a sizeable number of institutions to embed FAIR components and mechanisms across domains, geographic areas, and stakeholder groups, under the supervision of a FAIR Implementation Team.
One of the challenging tasks of the FAIR-IMPACT project is to boost harmonisation, dialogue, and collaboration among the many initiatives currently active in the EOSC framework. This will be done via the Synchronisation Force, building on the successful Synchronisation Force series from the , and developing a dialogue among the various projects, initiatives, and actors in both EOSC and FAIR ecosystems.
The project will run from June 2022 to May 2025.
Partners
Coordinated by DANS and supported by 27 additional partners from 11 countries, FAIR-IMPACT will build on the successful practices, policies, tools, and technical specifications from FAIRsFAIR, other Horizon 2020 projects and initiatives, and from the FAIR and other relevant Working Groups of the former EOSC Executive Board.
UK Data Service contribution
As one of the partners within the FAIR Implementation Team the UK Data Service will assist with the engagement-centred project objectives, such as managing open calls for the cascading grants and the evaluation of applications. The Service will be part of the team that encourages and facilitates the adoption of FAIR-principles across the network of repositories and data service providers.
The UK Data Service will participate in the landscape mapping of existing tools, approaches and frameworks produced by FAIRsFAIR and other previous projects and initiatives to address specific use cases in context (domain-specific, national, institutional, service).
With the integration of Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) into FAIR data management the Service will be supporting research communities to establish best practices around versioning, granularity, type registries, and PID minting practices for different types of datasets, workflows and research objects, as well as with other solutions that support reproducible research, actionable publications and FAIR data.
The Service will be involved in the testing and implementation of the FAIRsFAIR data object assessment metrics and F-UJI tool as it is developed to be more discipline-specific. The Service will collaborate with the other partners on guidelines and mechanisms improving connections between repository registries and discovery portals (including EOSC Portal), repository trustworthiness mechanisms (e.g. CoreTrustSeal) and FAIR digital object assessments.
